BACKGROUND

The research will be part of a high profile interdisciplinary translational research project on mouse stem cell differentiation. The project involves world-renowned laboratories specializing in bioinformatics and computational biology and in stem cell biology in relation to Cancer and regenerative medicine. These laboratories are part of an international consortium aimed at fully characterizing the network of regulatory interactions in mouse, and its evolution during differentiation. The appointed individual will enjoy a highly collaborative working environment with exiting career development opportunities. He or she will be working in the laboratory of Prof. Shoshana Wodak, at the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children. The Institute is one of the largest private research Institutes in Canada with an annual research budget of $140 millions and employs 235 Principal Investigators, 315 Research Fellows and 453 Graduate students. Prof. Wodak is affiliated with the Departments of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics of the University of Toronto, and enjoys close ties and numerous collaborations across the research community in Toronto and abroad.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will join a team of expert programers to develop methods and software for building, analyzing and visualizing pathways and biochemical networks using data from various public sources and those produced in-house by high and low throughput proteomics experiments (protein-protein interactions) and transcriptome analyses (mRNA expression, gene knockouts, iRNA knockdowns, ChIP-chip, SAGE, etc). Comparative genomics analyses will also be an important component.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, with a minimum of 2-3 years research experience and a good publication record. Demonstrated interest in comparative genomics and systems biology will be an advantage. The candidate should also have a solid background in statistics, with knowledge of machine learning techniques and be well versed in programming (Java and/or C++, Perl) and database development. Successful candidates will be highly motivated individuals with excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as capable of working within a larger multidisciplinary team.
