    BACKGROUND

A two year Post Doctor scholarship in the area of Bioinformatics is offered at The Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The Department of Computer and Information Science (IDI) has bioinformatics as a prioritized area. The activities at IDI are part of a larger effort within life science at NTNU, which is especially based on cooperation between and synergies from the fields of technology, medicine and biology. A number of researchers at IDI are working on problems related to biology and medicine, most often in cooperation with researchers from other disciplines at NTNU. During the last years IDI has funneled considerable funds for PhD scholarships into the area. The department will increase its efforts in bioinformatics and the IT part of systems biology, and has decided to offer two new positions in bioinformatics: a professorship and a post doctor scholarship.

Many areas within IT would be relevant for bioinformatics and systems biology. However, we have decided to let this position focus on the traditional core areas of bioinformatics: sequence analysis, development of algorithms for motif discovery based on new learning algorithms and advanced searching methods, pattern discovery and recognition, and management and analysis of large data volumes from biological experiments.

Bioinformatics is cross-disciplinary and there will be many possibilities for establishing research relationships with researchers from other disciplines and research groups and NTNU. Particularly relevant groups and disciplines we would like to mention are: molecular biology, Health Surveys of Northern Trøndelag (HUNT), the proteomics activities at the Faculty of Medicine, the micro array group (NMC), the plant genomics group (NARC) and the systems biology activities at the Faculty of Science and Technology.
