    Opportunity: COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST-MICROBIAL COMPARATIVE GENOMICS at the Broad Institute--Cambridge, MA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST-MICROBIAL COMPARATIVE GENOMICS to work directly with the chief technologist and assume responsibility for developing and applying advanced computational tools for the analysis of genome sequence.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The research will focus on applying mathematical and statistical approaches to investigate genome evolution, genomic diversity, and functionally conserved sequences. Will develop, document, maintain, interpret, and apply computational tools (within a biological context) using mathematical or statistical approaches; develop novel hypotheses based on biological knowledge; implement appropriate computational or data mining analyses; interact and coordinate with collaborators as required to integrate experimental validation with computational analysis; publish scholarly reports and present at scientific conferences; and participate within a team of scientists to foster a culture of scientific discourse and excellence.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    A Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience in biology, computer science, bioinformatics, or relevant scientific discipline; at least three-plus years of experience designing computational methods and tools, including experience with algorithms, mathematics, and/or statistics; and demonstrated proficiency with some combination of the following: Perl, UNIX, SQL, Java, C, and C++. Experience with relational databases and/or Matlab a plus. Must demonstrate an interest in at least one of the following research areas: genomics, genome evolution, regulatory networks, cellular biology, or microbiology. Should have outstanding personal initiative and be able to work effectively as part of a team.
