    BACKGROUND

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST-VIRAL GENOME ANALYSIS to work directly with the director of the center and its scientific planning and development team to develop and apply advanced computational tools to the analysis of viral genomes

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The research will focus on applying sequence analysis and phylogenetic and population genetics methodologies to questions in viral biology and in support of sequencing technology development. Will develop and apply computational tools and interpret results within a biological context; work with collaborators to integrate experimental validation with computational analysis; and communicate results to the scientific community through conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and project reports. Other duties include developing, documenting, maintaining, and applying computational tools using mathematical, statistical, or population genetics approaches; contributing to maintenance of analysis infrastructure supporting the microbial analysis team; and participating within a team of scientists to foster a culture of scientific discourse and excellence.

    REQUIREMENTS

A Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, physics, math, bioinformatics, genetics, or relevant scientific discipline; and experience designing computational methods and tools, including experience with algorithms and mathematics, statistics, or machine learning as applied to sequence analysis or population genetics. Demonstrated proficiency with some combination of the following required: Perl, Jython, Java, C, C++, or UNIX. Experience with standard phylogenetic tools (e.g., PAUP, PAML, Mr. Bayes) and knowledge of population genetics required. Experience with relational databases and/or MATLAB a plus. Must have demonstrated interest in at least one of the following research areas: genomics, virology, microbiology, evolutionary biology, or genetics. Outstanding personal initiative and ability to work effectively as part of a team expected.
