Summary of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Principal Investigator of the Bioinformatics Group in the Terry Fox Laboratory in Vancouver, Canada, and working in conjunction with Principal Investigators within the BCCRC and internationally, the Database Developer/Programmer will perform duties in support of the development, collection and maintenance of software infrastructure to support flow cytometry information management and the development of software tools to support data entry based on various ontologies.

Scope and Complexity

The Database Developer/Programmer provides leadership in the design, development, and implementation of database and software infrastructure to permit the storage and analysis of flow cytometry data. The position requires strong oral and written communication skills to collaborate and build relationships with the international flow cytometry community including senior scientists, industrial collaborators and multidisciplinary staff from multiple in support of these efforts. This position is relied upon to continually investigate, analyse, propose and implement solutions based on best practices and novel developments in the areas of data standards, database development and software tool design. Errors in judgment made by this position have the potential to result in loss of data placed in trust by the academic and industrial community into this resource.


Communications

Communicates with trainees, scientists, industrial collaborators and senior scientists internally, as well as with similar individuals from other scientific institutions and companies locally, nationally and internationally to foster collaboration in this effort. The ability to attract and maintain collaborations through both written and oral communications is essential for the position.


Duties/Accountabilities

1. Manages the development and implementation of an international data repository and develops and implements software to work with complex data sets.
2. Acts as lead developer for flowDB, an international repository for flow cytometry data (MySQL, PHP).
3. Maintains Data Repository web site [HTML, PHP, FTP, Linux].
4. Extends the Ontology for Biomedical Investigations (OBI) to include support for flow cytometry-specific data [OWL, Protégé] within flowDB.
5. Liaises with International Society for Analytical Cytology and journals to fulfill their security and data management requirements.
6. Implements web-based database interface [PHP].
7. Participates in organization of an international data sharing network.
8. Performs complex cluster analysis, data visualization and other bioinformatics analysis and writes code when required [Java, C].
9. Implements data standard exchange support within repository [XML].
10. Reports regularly to the Principal Investigator on progress of projects/experiments, using advanced data analysis and reporting techniques.
11. Works and liaises with collaborating statisticians and performs complex statistical and data analysis.
12. Prepares a variety of reports and manuscripts.
13. Monitors and orders supplies as required.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s program in a related discipline such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Genetics, and a degree or diploma in IT. A minimum of five (5) years of recent related experience including experience in computer programming, data analysis and bioinformatics or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the TFL principal investigators.


Skills and Abilities

• Experience developing and implementing ontologies using OWL in the context of biological data required.
• Experience in Java, C, PHP programming languages.
• Experience in biological databases based on SQL or MySQL.
• Experience with web development in the Linux environment using Apache, Tomcat.
• Experience with data standards, including XML.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
• Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility and work independently.
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities.
• Excellent organizational, leadership interpersonal and communication skills.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
