BACKGROUND

A biotechnology company based in Cambridgeshire, UK requires a Research Scientist (Bioinformatics) to lead the development of plant genomic data analysis for the isolation of gene targets for use by the Biotechnology Group to aid the generation of novel plant varieties, especially in support of R&D projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Direct and deliver the analysis, assessment and biological interpretation of data collected from plant microarray experiments. Responsibility for statistically accurate experimental design and involvement in planning of studies.
• Development, implementation and management of a plant bioinformatics resource for the biotechnology group.
• Application of array data for the identification and evaluation of potential gene targets for modification in plant and the subsequent development of an improved product.
• Key representative in studies with Contract Research Organisations and links with both internal (Bio-assessment group) and external stakeholders (Research facilities, Universities). Develop collaborations with additional academic/ industrial groups.
• Contribute to the company’s scientific engagement strategy through the publication of results from genomics research projects in peer-reviewed journals and by presentations at scientific meetings and conferences.

REQUIREMENTS

• Biology graduate, with experience in bioinformatics.
• Good knowledge of microarray technology, functional biology and plant physiology and biochemistry .
• An aptitude for organising data and working with precision, care and accuracy. Highly motivated and self-starter.
• Computer skills (Microsoft Office, especially Excel), experience of statistical methods for experimental design and analysis of microarray data. Use of complex computational packages e.g. Genespring, and web based packages for the analysis and interpretation of gene expression data.
• Effective project management skills, the aptitude to recognise problems and solve them accordingly.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex scientific issues.
• Good interpersonal skills for the development and maintenance of contacts within the company, contract research organisations, academia and the industry.
