The J. Craig Venter Institute is a not-for-profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of the science of genomics. JCVI is currently seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst to join their Informatics group.DESCRIPTION
The Bioinformatics Analyst I will support the manual gene annotation and data analysis needs of multiple microbial genome projects.RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities of the Bioinformatics Analyst I include:
Critically assessing different lines of computational evidence (i.e., multiple sequence alignments, BLAST alignments, Hidden Markov Models)
Gene structure annotation which includes determination of the transcription initiation site, presence of structural defects (i.e.,frameshifts, nonsense mutations), and other biologically relevant structures (i.e., programmed frameshifts, inteins, etc.)
Gene function annotation, including assigning informative names and classifying gene products by biological function and/or process
Prediction of biochemical pathways based on functional annotation
Data mining and analysis using various internal resources, public databases and publications
Proficient use of Structured Query Language and relational database schemas
Interpretation of complex biological informationREQUIREMENTS
Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in the biological sciences and have independent research experience including data analysis. Familiarity working with computers in the field of biological sciences and a beginning knowledge of Sybase, SQL, and the Unix operating system required.
