    BACKGROUND:The Laboratoire de génomique fonctionelle de l’Université de Sherbrooke is looking for an experienced programmer-analyst to be in charge of its Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The Laboratory has undertaken a large-scale functional genomics study of alternative splicing (AS) in breast and ovarian cancer. This high content project includes bioinformatics, RNA biology, RNA interference (siRNA) and antisense technology on a high-throughput platform.

    Located in the Biotechnology Development Center, in the Sherbrooke biomedical park and at the entrance of the Université de Sherbrooke health campus, the candidate will be integrated to a team of four bioinformaticians and one system administrator already in place.
    Software developers are currently working with Linux servers and work stations whereas end-users have Windows stations.
    Contract with possibility of renewal. Salary and benefits according to Université de Sherbrooke policy and standards – Professionnel de Recherche.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:In charge of the LIMS – Web application running with Perl, Apache and MySQL , used for the laboratory data entry, processing and analysis.
    • Set-up of new features – the candidate will be in charge of getting all users requisites, conceiving prototypes to be approved by the users, making analyses to be discussed with the bioinformaticians, and implementing & testing the analysed solutions.
    • Maintenance of the LIMS – the candidate will be in charge of fixing up all reported bugs, following up on problems and users requests, and releasing all new versions.
    • - Moreover, the candidate may sometimes have to respond to users by making operations directly in the database, when they can not do it through the application. The candidate may also have to set-up temporary solutions until he/she can set-up and integrate a better solution.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Baccalaureat in Computer Science or equivalent training
  • Two years of experience, mastering and autonomy in the execution of the following tasks:
  • Obtaining users requisites
  • Conceiving prototypes
  • Web application programming
  • Using a relational database
  • Using a versions management software
    • Good communication skills.
    • Fluency in French and English.
    • Basic knowledge of biology or experience with large-scale genomics projects. However, all motivated individuals possessing working experience with high throughput data and showing interest in understanding and following the users' work will be considered.

PREFERENCES

The following will be considered a plus:
  • Experience in object-oriented Perl programming.
  • Experience with MySQL database server
  • Experience with source code management software CVS
  • Experience in creation of UML/ER diagrams
  • Ability and interest in reading scientific articles
  • Creative thinking and problem solving skills
  • Good sense of self-criticism
  • An interest for innovative solutions and automation
TERMS: Until December 2009 with possibility of renewal.
