Function and Scope:

The Informatics Specialist serves as ACC’s staff expert on health information technology (HIT) and is a liaison to national organizations concerned with standards and interoperability in the area of performance measurement, quality improvement, electronic health records, and personal health records. The Informatics Specialist assists in the development and maintenance of online resources to facilitate physician adoption of electronic health records (EHR). This position also provides administrative and project support to ACC’s Informatics Committee, and coordinates activities in support of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) project.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

§ Functions as ACC’s expert in the direction and activities that support the National Health Information Network. This includes standards-setting and certification bodies, and quality improvement and performance measurement organizations.
§ Provides subject matter expertise to advocacy staff and members in assessing federal legislation and CMS requirements related to health information technology.
§ Creates draft policy statement documents in the area of HIT, solicits input and develops consensus among member experts, and prepares final documents to be published.
§ Maintains Informatics-related online web sites and tools by organizing content and coordinating updates with Communications, Project Management Office and web developers.
§ Tracks trends in the development of HIT technologies, including personal health records, electronic health records, and health information enterprises. Recommends actions to organization to provide value in these areas.
§ Coordinates IHE Project efforts for members, staff and other participants, including scheduling and leading conference calls, setting agendas, providing minutes, and ensuring participants complete assigned tasks.
§ Assists with organization’s EHR adoption efforts by researching and translating current and best practices in selecting and implementing EHRs in clinical practice.
§ Works as a team member to accomplish goals of Informatics Department. Assists other department staff to complete projects on schedule.
§ Participates on multiple cross-divisional teams to accomplish goals of improving patient care by translating ACC/AHA guidelines into clinical practice at the point of care, measuring performance, and completing needs assessment.

Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:
§ Three or more years working in the field of health information technology.
§ Demonstrable knowledge of HIT standards and NHIN activities.
§ Demonstrated experience managing multiple simultaneous projects involving cross-functional technical teams.
§ Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, prioritization, conflict resolution, and analytical skills.
§ Strong verbal and written communications and presentation skills.
§ Advanced skills in office productivity software, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and Project. Experience with Webex and Visio preferred.
§ Clinical or technical domain experience in imaging, critical care or EMR systems preferred.
§ Experience with IHE (any domain), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects, knowledge of inpatient and ambulatory care workflows a plus.

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s or Masters degree required. Educational background in IT, Healthcare Information Technology or clinical domain preferred.

2. Three or more years related work experience with evidence-based medicine, healthcare information technology assessment, or health services research. Association, not-for-profit experience a plus.

3. Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills.

4. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

5. Advanced skills in Windows-based office productivity software products, especially those currently in use at the American College of Cardiology (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, PowerPoint).

6. Ability to initiate projects and to work independently, as well as a part of a team.


7. Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to organize multiple tasks and set priorities under strict deadlines.


8. Ability to travel to support College and committee meetings as needed. Up to 25% of time may be spent traveling.
