    BACKGROUND

The Bioinformatics Unit in the Department of Computer Science at University College London invites applications for a BBSRC funded postdoctoral position to develop bioinformatics methods for the analysis and prediction of membrane protein structure. In particular, the work will involve building a pipeline for automatic modelling of transmembrane protein structures along with methods for assessing the quality of the models. A further aspect of the project will entail developing a database to make these models available to biologists along with integrated functional information. This post is part of a joint project with Prof. Janet Thornton at the European Bioinformatics Institute.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Undertake the day-to-day work of the project, including software development and testing, design of novel algorithms, background literature reviews, preparation of posters and presentations, mathematical/statistical modeling and analysis and other tasks as detailed in Duties and Responsibilities.

    REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a relevant PhD (e.g. in bioinformatics), with good bioinformatics software development skills and familiarity with protein structure data. Fluency in both written and spoken English, along with experience of writing published scientific papers is essential.

    PREFERENCES

Knowledge in areas such as database development, the principles of membrane protein structure, and machine learning would be helpful.

    TERMS

The position is funded for 3 years starting in October 2007. The post is on the UCL Grade 7 scale, the salary for which ranges from £29,238 to £35,368 inclusive p.a.
