Opportunity: Bioinformatics Staff Scientist at Indiana University; Bloomington, IN (US)

BACKGROUND:
The CGB (http://cgb.indiana.edu), a campus-wide research center, carries out research in all aspects of genomics and bioinformatics. Center scientists work both independently and in collaboration with faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Medicine and Informatics. The CGB is home to the Drosophila Genomics Resource Center and is a leading participant in the Daphnia Genomics Consortium, the Indiana Center for Insect Genomics, and the Indiana METACYT Initiative. Both Indiana University (http:www.research.indiana.edu) and the State of Indiana (http://www.biocrossroads.com) have made the life sciences a priority, and the CGB is an active participant in this effort. Bloomington is routinely rated an exceptionally desirable place to live.

The CGB currently has several vacancies in it Bioinformatics Group. These positions offer the opportunity to work in a fast-moving collegial environment and to collaborate with geneticists, molecular biologists, and mathematicians. Appointments will be at the rank of Research Associate.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include active participation in independent and collaborative research leading to publications; providing general bioinformatics consulting to life scientists at IU Bloomington; teaching bioinformatics workshops to life scientists; and installing and maintaining bioinformatics software for use within the CGB and by other IUB life scientists. The precise division of responsibilities between this and other bioinformatics positions may be adjusted to match the skills and preferences of successful candidates.

REQUIREMENTS: M.S.-level (or B.X. with comparable experience) Requisite skills include programming (e.g., Perl), sequence analysis (e.g. molecular phylogeny, motif finding), statistical analysis using R, web programming, familiarity with mySQL, and microarray analysis. Strong communication skills are also required, in both written and spoken English.

COMPENSATION: Salary based on the candidate's preparation and prior experience.
