Opportunity: Post-doctoral position in statistical genomics, HSC Research Institute--Toronto, Canada

Description
A post-doctoral position is available immediately at the Research Institute, The Hospital for Sick Children, to work on statistical methodology for the analysis of high-dimensional data arising from modern experimental technologies in genomics.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with Dr. Joseph Beyene on data sets that are being generated by investigators involved in a Genome Canada funded project entitled â€œIdentification of Genetic Pathways that Regulate Survival and Development of Cancer & Cancer Stem Cellsâ€?. This project is lead by Dr. Cynthia Guidos at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and includes other SickKids Investigators as well as collaborators from the Princess Margaret Hospital/Ontario Cancer Institute. The project is generating large data sets from gene expression microarrays, array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) experiments, and proteomic experiments. The overall goal of this project is to identify signaling and transcription factor networks that are abnormally active in cancer cells, providing candidate biomarkers for predicting responses to therapy, and identifying candidates for potentially novel targeted cancer therapies.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in (Bio)Statistics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Excellent programming (SAS/Splus/R/Matlab and some C/C++/Java/Perl) and communication skills are required. The applicant should be enthusiastic and comfortable working with real as well as simulated data and must be able to work independently. Experience in genetics/genetic epidemiology, computational biology, microarray data analysis would be an asset.

Additional Comments
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and the expected start date is mid September 2007.

Toronto is home to a large and active research group in microarray data analysis and statistical genetics, and there is a weekly seminar series drawing attendance from the University of Toronto and several research institutes.
