BACKGROUND

The Biosciences Division (BSD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a computational biologist/bioinformaticist to lead the design of data management and data integration systems and tools. These activities would support the new BioEnergy Science Center (BESC), a five year project which is using multiple techniques to understand the structure of biomass and its recalcitrance to processing by enzyme systems. The focus of this research area intersects the field of biology with computing, engineering, and the physical and analytical sciences with the overall objective of developing computational and data systems that will help provide insight through an integration of results from experimental techniques and computational models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will perform independent and team research in bioinformation systems. In addition to support of BESC, the staff member will be expected to initiate new projects of interest to various DOE, NIH, and other funding agencies.

REQUIREMENTS

The position requires a M.S. or Ph.D. in the computational sciences with a strong background in data management and data integration, including detailed working knowledge of relational databases, laboratory and workflow management systems, or a Ph.D. in computational biology with a strong background and research experience in data, analysis, and visualization systems. Experience with plant genomics or microorganisms will be a plus. The successful candidate will have outstanding communications and interpersonal skills, and will perform effectively in a dynamic, intellectually stimulating multi-disciplinary research environment. Demonstrated leadership ability is a plus for this position.

This position offers access to the world-class high-performance computing environment at the ORNL Center for Computational Sciences as well as the new Joint Institute for Biological Sciences in the Biosciences Division, close collaborations with biologists and computational scientists, and a stimulating research environment. Joint appointments with relevant departments at the nearby University of Tennessee are possible.
