    DESCRIPTION

A 3-year postdoctoral position is available to work on quantitative aspects of phylogenetics. The principal investigators are from two universities in Montréal, Québec: F.-J. Lapointe and P. Legendre at Université de Montréal, V. Makarenkov and P. R. Peres-Neto at Université du Québec à Montréal. The salary is $35 000 CAN per year (non taxable), and the project can begin immediately.

    REQUIREMENTS

The candidates should have a strong background in mathematics and/or statistics, and in the analysis of bioinformatics problems. The project will also require an understanding of biological evolution and programming skills.

    RESEARCH

The project consists in studying reticulate evolution in the context of horizontal gene transfer, hybridization between species, and biogeographic networks. New methods to reconstruct phylogenetic networks will be developed and tested using simulated and real data sets from each of the three application fields. Models will also be developed to estimate the reliability of different statistical methods in reconstructing phylogenetic networks. One of the goals is to produce computer programs that will be distributed as freeware.

    Language requirements: French or English.

    HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should submit a CV, a statement of research interests, and the names and contact information for three references. Send this material to V. Makarenkov , or F.-J. Lapointe , or P. Legendre , or P. R. Peres-Neto .
