    BACKGROUND

    The Institute for Animal Health (IAH) is one of seven research institutes of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and is at the forefront of research into animal diseases. The Bioinformatics group at the IAH is responsible for management, integration and analysis of heterogeneous biological data, and thus has an increasing and crucial role in the delivery of excellent innovative science. The Institute's strategy recognizes the growing importance novel approaches to the integration of diverse biological data, leading to new levels of biological understanding, and thence to new ways of controlling disease. The application of innovative techniques of "Systems Biology" to understanding the complexity inherent in host-pathogen interactions and their evolution, will be a major growth area within the Institute's research program. Thus the Bioinformatics group will be pivotally involved in the challenging task of bringing these approaches to bear on the unique questions relevant to animal disease and zoonosis. This will involves both the application of existing tools and new tools developed elsewhere, to data generated at the Institute, and the development of novel methods.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The advertised post will be directly involved in the development of Integrative Systems Biology, developing and implementing integrated and user-friendly software systems to enable both experimental investigators and bioinformaticians to gain the maximum possible insights from both local and external dataset, and from their integrated analysis. In the first instance, this will involve exploitation and integration of genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic information in several projects. It is envisaged the post will liaise with the IAH mathematical biology group and to develop external collaborations with BBSRC centres for Integrative Systems Biology, to explore ways in which mathematical modeling techniques may be applied to these post-genomic datasets. The group seeks to appoint a bioinformatician with strong programming and database skills and an interest in the application of mathematics and statistics to biological questions. We will be looking for experience with one or more of the following: linux; perl, C or java programming; MySQL or other SQL database; R, S-plus, Matlab or SAS; Ensembl or other genome annotation project. Experience of both the analysis of microarray data and genome sequence data will be most desirable, and experience of the analysis of proteomics data will be an added advantage.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Suitable candidates will ideally have a degree in biological sciences or related subject, with a further degree, or equivalent experience, involving bioinformatics and/or mathematical biology. Applicants with demonstrable knowledge of statistics and mathematical modeling are particularly encouraged. Please see below for more details:
