    BACKGROUND

Ensembl is one of the leaders in vertebrate genome annotation and one of the key projects at the EBI. A part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratoy, the EBI is located in Hinxton, near Cambridge, United Kingdom.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Ensembl project is seeking to recruit a talented bioinformatician / computer programmer. The Ensembl variation informatics team requires a C/C++ programmer to extend and develop open source alignment software (such as SSAHA and exonerate) to meet the challenges posed by new sequencing technologies. These technologies require the rapid and accurate mapping of short DNA sequence reads against assembled genome sequences. The post holder will also participate in the building of a full scale analysis pipeline to maximise information discovery from sequencing data and incorporate this data into our main variation data resources including the Ensembl genome browser.

    REQUIREMENTS

The successful applicant must have Master's degree in computer science with 3+ years programming experience in C/C++. Experience in bioinformatics is desirable.

The ability to be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment is essential. She/he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines, and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Excellent commnication skills are essential.

The post holder must be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment. Proficiency with Perl and experience with relational databases such as MySQL is desirable.
