    BACKGROUND:
    The South African National Bioinformatics Institute is looking for a curator for its eVOC system, a controlled vocabulary to describe gene expression states (http://evocontology.org).

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Tasks include the development of webservices for an existing C++/Java backend, maintenance and extension of a Java webinterface and support of standards development.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • a demonstrated experience in developing user applications
    • good understanding of database systems (SQL)
    • proficiency and good programming practices in C/C++ and Java.
    Experience with a UNIX environment, a working knowledge of any high level programming language (Python, Perl, Ruby) and interest in standard formats (XML, RDF) is a plus. Software development at SANBI takes places in tight collaboration with local and international partners which include UniProt (Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics), the European Bioinformatics Institute, RIKEN and the Gene Ontology Team. Communication with other developers to ensure compliance with existing international standards is therefore essential.

    LOCALE

    The South African Bioinformatics Institute is a non-profit National Institute dedicated to the development of Bioinformatics and Genomics in South Africa. Based at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) SANBI was founded in April 1996 with to develop a world-class institute where the skills in information technology, genomics and biotechnology required to understand genomes could be transferred to South African scientists and students. As a result of this strategy UWC has become the leading institution in Africa in the field of Bioinformatics, responsible for the founding of the African Society of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and providing the WHO regional centre for training in pathogen bioinformatics. SANBI specializes in research into gene expression and disease. As such, it’s projects span the fields of HIV vaccine development, diabetes disease gene detection and discovery of genes involved in initiation of cancers. Recently, SANBI has opened a pathogen bioinformatics centre, headed by Professor Winston Hide and a team of internationally renowned scientists, and funded by the SA Medical research council.
