BACKGROUND
The National Bioinformatics Network (NBN) was created in South Africa to develop capacity in bioinformatics in the country, especially among disadvantaged groups, and to perform world-class bioinformatics research. The NBN is made up of a network of nodes each situated at a University, for more information on the NBN see: http://www.nbn.ac.za. The UCT node of the National Bioinformatics Network was established in 2003 with the aim of becoming an internationally recognised research and training center, addressing the challenges of bioinformatics capacity development in the region. The UCT Node includes the following components: infrastructure, research, education and training, and services. For more information on the Node see: http://www.cbio.uct.ac.za.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Node has close ties with the InterPro group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). InterPro is a curated database of protein families, domains and functional sites, characterised by protein signatures. The UCT NBN Node is seeking a Scientific Database Curator to annotate the InterPro database. Work includes the annotation of protein families using the scientific literature and mapping of families to biological pathways and the Gene Ontology. The work will be done in close collaboration with the InterPro team at EBI and international collaborators.REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant area (Biology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Biostatistics or Computational Biology), and will preferably have some experience in annotation. Excellent organizational and communication skills, including good written and spoken English are an advantage.PREFERENCES
