BACKGROUND

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) provides the scientific community with annotated versions of genome assemblies for a wide variety of organisms. We are seeking a genomic scientist experienced in working with Linux/UNIX to assist in the coordination of the complex series of tasks required to produce NCBI’s annotated eukaryotic genome assemblies from data deposited in the public sequence databases.

The successful candidate will work onsite at the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in Bethesda MD.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Organize and validate data required to initiate running new genome assemblies though NCBI's eukaryotic genome annotation pipeline.
• Set up and run the automated parts of the annotation pipeline, and manage the manual steps.
• Monitor the progress of genomes through the multiple steps in the annotation pipeline and run quality assurance checks on intermediate data sets.
• Manage requests for special data sets: define the tasks involved and track progress.
• Collaborate with other biologists and programmers to improve the genome annotation process and the quality of the annotation produced.

REQUIREMENTS

• Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, or related field
• Extensive experience with sequence analysis, genomics or bioinformatics
• Linux/UNIX experience
• Scripting experience in Perl
or Awk is desirable
• Strong organizational skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Detail-oriented perspective
• Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other scientists and programmers
• Interest in contributing to public database resources
