We are looking for a Database Software Engineer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.
The successful applicant will be working closely with the Database Administrators and project teams, supporting multiple database applications primarily as an database specialist within the Protein and Nucleotide Database Group (PANDA), which is a large group providing all the sequence resources at the EBI, from DNA through to protein and encompassing the associated databases, such as genome databases (eg, Ensembl), protein families (eg, InterPro), protein function (eg, UniProtKB), proteomics (eg, Pride) and ontologies (eg, GOA).
Tasks will include database design for new projects, and database application performance tuning and trouble-shooting for the existing projects, as well as the contribution to the good practice on database applications and providing the trainings to software engineers on database programming through seminars.
Applicants must hold a degree in Computer Science and have a proven record in software development, experience in programming PL/SQL and excellent knowledge/background in Oracle databases. Experience in Oracle database performance tuning, knowledge of large databases and proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java and C++ is essential. The previous experience with open source RDBMS, such as MySQL, will be beneficial.
Candidates must have excellent communication skills and work well in a team but independently.

The starting salary is £30,000 to £40,000 per annum with regular reviews.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
