    BACKGROUND

    J. Craig Venter Institute ("JCVI") is a not-for-profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of the science of genomics.

    JCVI is seeking several individuals to integrate, design, develop, maintain and apply bioinformatics tools in support of JCVI’s research activities in genomic assembly and annotation, comparative genomics, resequencing, genomic medicine, environmental genomics and synthetic genomics. Our diverse and talented team includes domain experts in biology, software engineering, scientific visualization, bioinformatics, high-performance computing and user interface design. We are interested in hiring experienced professionals capable of leading projects. Our ongoing success requires that we hire only the most enthusiastic and talented software engineering and bioinformatics professionals.

    This is a senior technical position responsible for operating, supporting, maintaining, developing, integrating, and deploying software that supports the scientific mission of the JCVI. The Bioinformatics Team Lead will exercise project leadership over teams of colleagues as a significant component of their role.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Masters or PhD in Biology or equivalent. Formal training in computer science or software engineering preferred. At least 7 years bioinformatics experience.

    Experience with:
    • Bioinformatics tools and techniques
    • Scripting languages (Perl, Python, shell) and associated tools
    • Web technologies (HTML, DHTML, XML, CSS, and JavaScript) and Graphics tools (Photoshop, Image Ready, Fireworks or similar).
    • Relational Database (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, and related tools including SQL and PL/SQL) design, data warehousing
    • Data Modeling (UML, ER, Ontology-based) and Agile development practices
    Demonstrated ability to:
    • Lead a team of technical professionals
    • Execute complex tasks effectively with minimal supervision
    • Advance the level of software and bioinformatics technology used within their team
    • Provide project leadership and management within and beyond the scope of their own team
    • Define and estimate scope of tasks prior to implementation
    • Execute projects within estimated time frames
    Also:
    • Expert level knowledge of team’s assigned scientific domain and extensive experience with team’s software and IT.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to collaborate across a multi-disciplinary team, and work independently.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential Functions of the position include:
    • Supports the full software development lifecycle as well as operations for software-based tools developed at JCVI, typically integrating COTS, or open-source software from 3rd parties.
    • Works under the supervision and direction of software engineering management, or their designees, to execute software engineering assignments to meet project goals. Ability to work independently where appropriate, exercising engineering judgment and involving supervisory personnel where appropriate. The software engineer’s assignments will be determined by their management as a function of business requirements and personnel capabilities.
    • Develops and maintains an understanding of the biological domain supported by their team, as well as algorithms, software and IT technologies used by their team. Capable of evaluating new tools, algorithms, and techniques and leading their adopting by their team.
    • Collaborates closely and effectively with software, bioinformatics, scientific, information technology, and administrative personnel within and outside the Venter Institute to accomplish goals. Is an effective member of software and multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Provides key input to recruiting and hiring decision, including technical review of candidates.
    • Complies with all documented JCVI policies and procedures. Works with manager and JCVI administrative functions to resolve issues as they arise.
