Senior Database & Ontology Curator - ELIXIR
The European Bioinformatics Institute, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, seeks a Senior Database & Ontology Curator. The project is part of the preparatory phase of the European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information (ELIXIR, http://www.elixir-europe.org) and will perform an assessment of the European Resources for Systems Biology. The post is based at the EBI on the Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridge. We currently have 350 staff, students and visitors.
The position is based in the Research Group of Nicolas Le Novere.
Available resources (databases, ontologies etc.) will be identified and recorded in the MIRIAM database (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/miriam/) and missing resources listed. A technical feasibility of their integration will be pursued, based on the use of ontologies and semantic-rich annotations.
The postholder will help in identifying the existing and missing resources, and help toward their integration by enriching ontologies (in particular SBO, http://www.ebi.ac.uk/sbo/) and controlled annotations of data format (SBML, BioPAX).
Applicants must hold a PhD or a Masters in Biology, Physics or Mathematics. The curation of Systems Biology Ontologies necessitates an understanding of the biology and of the mathematics used in computational biology. It is therefore expected that applicants have relevant past experience in computational systems biology, with knowledge of chemical kinetics, differential calculus and numerical analysis.
The successful candidate is a team worker who is able to interact with other members of the team, resource and tool developers, as well as users of the resources and the wider community. The ability to work independently is essential. The position requires the ability to work under time pressure and the dedication to communicate frequently and openly.
Experience of Linux/Unix and at least one scripting language (Perl, Python, Shell, …) is required.
