BACKGROUND:
The data integration specialist within the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMi) is responsible for the independent development of integrated data systems within the research setting. This position demands an individual with superior technical and innovative database creation, administration, and programming skills, as well as diplomatic and organizational skills associated with the successful management of resources within a matrix environment. In addition, this individual requires an individual with a large degree of experience in the modeling of highly complex data types such as genomics and proteomics. This individual will interact heavily with other data transformation and integration Hospital initiatives to demonstrate proof-of-concept integration ideas and to promote the proper representation of data and activities created and utilized by the diverse Stokes researcher population.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Innovative integrated systems design

• --Proactively extracts and organizes data integration requirements from multiple cross-Hospital departments and divisions, including Hospital and Research Information Systems, iTACH, individual Stokes researchers, and Stokes administrators.
• --Designs innovative solutions for data integration that accommodate all parties involved using a combination of independent tactical decision-making and guidance from supervisory personnel.
• --Effectively seeks, builds, and achieves consensus on key data integration research initiatives
• --Determines strategic alignment of resulting systems with other Hospital initiatives and actively promotes the fitness of the resulting systems.
• --Develops data models that describe processes and data flows related to applications of high complexity associated with genomics and proteomics and other highly multidimensional applications.
• --Leads project planning activities as needed.
• --Makes oral presentations to colleagues and clients.
• --Clearly articulates problems, issues, and potential solutions to team members and clients.

Database systems creation and administration

• --Works with other data integration personnel to develop data models that describe processes and data flows related to applications of high complexity.
• --Works with other data integration personnel to develop highly complex written specifications for logical and physical design.
• --Works with other data integration personnel to develop written documentation for resulting systems.
• --Works with other data integration personnel to code resulting systems of complex difficulty in a variety of languages

Non-clinical data modeling

• --Works with other Hospital entities to develop a strategic plan for the incorporation of genomics, proteomics, and other highly multidimensional data types into the Hospital’s developing data systems.
• --Works with other Hospital entities to develop a strategic plan for the incorporation of algorithms derivative of genomics, proteomics, and other highly multidimensional data types into the Hospital’s developing data systems. These algorithms may include pre-processing, feature selection, predictive models, etc.
• --Works with other Hospital entities to facilitate the development of various applications for genomics, proteomics, and other highly multidimensional, non-clinical data.
• --Liaisons with external health sciences data groups involved with standards such as HL7, CDISC, and SNOMED and liaisons with data activities groups of national scope, including CTSA

REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION – BS required/MS preferred in Computer Science, Information Science, Informatics, or related discipline.

EXPERIENCE –5 or more years experience in database development, database administration, and/or programming within a health sciences environment necessary. 3 or more years experience in medical and research data modeling required. Previous experience in data modeling and applications of highly multidimensional data types such as that derived from genomics, proteomics, or image analysis is strongly preferred. Experience in theory and application of data standards and governance within a health sciences environment preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES – Working knowledge of project management and business processes is preferred. Must exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrates expert knowledge of the Systems Development Life Cycle.
