    BACKGROUND

The European Bioinformatics Institute, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, seeks a Computational Biologist – HT Phenotype Imaging. The post is based at the EBI on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridge. We currently have 350 staff, students and visitors.

The position is based in the Research Group of Wolfgang Huber.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The aim of this position is to (i) develop computational methodology for cellular phenotype databases of images of cells generated by high-throughput automated microscopy, (ii) establish a prototype system for serving massive collections of images of cells showing phenotypes induced by RNAi or molecular compounds to biological and computational researchers, (iii) establish and maintain a dialogue on data standards and content with data producers and consumers. The data to be served are large collections of systematically related images from 2D fluorescence and 3D confocal microscopy, in some cases using time-lapse live cell imaging. The tasks of the job holder will include basic curation of datasets, establishment of a browsable web-access as well as a queryable web-service for accessing the data, and the installation and adaptation of a distributed data storage solution in co-operation with data producers.

The position offers excellent opportunities for interaction with both computational and experimental researchers.

    REQUIREMENTS

The position would be suitable for a PhD scientist from computational physics or astronomy wishing to do research in biology, as well as for a biologist or a member of another discipline with excellent computer skills.

The successful candidate is a team worker who is able to employ sophisticated computational methods to solve real biological problems and create solutions that are relevant to users. The position requires the ability to work under time pressure and the dedication to communicate frequently and openly.

Fluency in C/C++ or Java, experience with distributed storage systems, web technologies and knowledge of a data analysis language such as R or Matlab.

    COMPENSATION

Benefits include 30 days annual leave, a health care and pension scheme and support to staff with dependent children. The Campus provides an excellent working environment, with car-share schemes, on-site and subsidised restaurant, café and gym.

    HOW TO APPLY
