From the September 15, 2001 (print) issue[1] of Genetic Engineering News[2]:

"Visitors to this site will first think they've hit another news-of-the-minute site for bioinformatics, given the opening page that screams "Bio News" (sic) as its most prominent feature. In fact, the focus of Bioinformatics.org is more related to open-source, freely distributed software and information for bioinformatics than it is to news. The stated goal of the nonprofit organization that hosts the site is to keep "biological information freely available," and does this by encouraging software development. Why then the very visible focus on news? I'm not sure. It does help to round out the site, but I'd prefer to see more emphasis on the goals and software development up-front."

I can't resist mentioning that the site received an "Excellent" rating. Very nice!
