BACKGROUND

A post doctoral research position in computational biology is available at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to join our team of 8 researchers on a NIH NIGMS funded project to calculate mechanical and thermodynamic properties of proteins. Our group includes a computational physicist, Dr. Donald Jacobs (PI, Physics), a computational physical chemist, Dr. Dennis Livesay (co-PI, Bioinformatics), two senior research associates, postdoc, and three Ph.D. graduate students. We have developed new methods to accurately and rapidly calculate free energies of aqueous proteins.

The successful candidate will be involved in applications related to understanding stability changes upon site directed mutations, non-additivity in double mutations, protein-substrate association, allosteric response, protein heat (and cold) denaturation, pH effects, and protein design. The appointment is for two years, renewable on the second year upon satisfactory progress.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate should have excellent programming skills in C++ to help with implementation of new code that is parallelizable with full threading capabilities. The outcome will be the release of a novel publicly available software called FAST for Flexibility And Stability Test. Prototype calculations reveals CPU times to be a few minutes to analyze a 1000 residue protein using 64 G5-Xserve processors.

REQUIREMENTS

Solid background in scientific computing. Excellent knowledge of C/C++, Open MPI, and UNIX environment for development.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to persons with experience in high performance scientific computing that has coded more than 15,000 C++ lines for computations (not GUI).
