    BACKGROUND

The Physical Biosciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has a unique Database Programmer opportunity within the Department of Energy, Genomics: Genomes to Life (GTL) project. This project investigates the ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to respond to and survive external stresses. As a member of the data management team, key roles are to ensure timely and secure access to project data through user-friendly interfaces, data integrity and integration with public resources. Learn more about the Genomics GTL program at http://pbd.lbl.gov/gtl/default.htm.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Design and implement a relational database to store experimental data and related metadata from a diverse set of microbiology experiments
    • Develop software that will reliably track experiments and data, and will load information and data into the database
    • Devise quality control methods for data integrity
    • Clearly document data loading procedures and software operation
    • Assist with integrating experimental data into an existing genomics database and Web based tools for comparatives genomics (http://www.microbesonline.org)
    • Provide guidance and training to other group members

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Significant experience developing software in a research biological field, or for scientific applications
    • Relational database experience, preferably with MySQL and Postgres, including design and implementation
    • Perl experience, some JAVA or C
    • Experience developing Web-based applications in CGI for data access, import, and display
    • Ability to resolve software issues resourcefully, including independent approaches as well specifications developed by others
    • Demonstrated ability to code
    • Basic understanding of metadata and data provenance concepts
    • Experience with Linux and basic familiarity with Windows
