    BACKGROUND

    A Bioinformatics Specialist (programmer) position is available immediately at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Wayne State University. The successful candidate will facilitate identification, expression analysis, and evolutionary assessments of primate-specific genes and long noncoding-RNA transcriptional units, for combined computational and experimental efforts whose goal is to assign function to these components of the transcriptome.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Set up local, automated BLAST and BLAT searches of large sequence datasets.

    Analyze UCSC Genome Database transcript-to-genome alignments to interrogate multispecies conservation of sequence and gene structure.

    Perform cDNA and EST artefact filtering and in-silico expression profiling.

    Integrate gene structure, regulation, and expression data in customized pipelines yielding novel biological insights pertinent to nonconserved and noncoding-RNA genes.

    Construct custom UCSC tracks from raw sequence and annotation files.

    Perform periodic updates of local BLAST databases and local UCSC datasets.

    Assist with custom expression microarray probe design and probe specificity assessments.

    Assist with analysis of microarray data.

    Assist with preparation of tables and supplementary data files for peer-reviewed publications.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Master's Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field. Alternatively, Bachelor's Degree with at least one year of related work experience.

    U.S. CITIZENSHIP, U.S. PERMANENT RESIDENT STATUS, OR A CURRENT AND VALID AUTHORIZATION TO WORK IN THE U.S.

    Some knowledge of UCSC Genome Browser databases and tables.

    Some knowledge of BLASTN, megaBLAST, BLASTZ, BLAT, liftOver, and RNA secondary structure prediction programs.

    Prior experience with open-source bioinformatics tools. BioPerl or BioPython etc. experience desirable.

    Some knowledge of statistical tests commonly used in genomics applications.

    Awareness of experimental biology from college-level coursework and/or applied experience.

    TERMS

    Two-year initial contract. Renewable subject to performance and availability of extramural funding.

    Wayne State University main campus, Detroit, Michigan.
