BACKGROUND

We are looking for a Bioinformatician to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. The European Bioinformatics Institute provides cutting edge research and services for biomolecular data, including the high quality annotation of biomolecular databases.

The Microarray Informatics Team at the EBI has an opening for a Bioinformatician to work on an exciting new EC project Gen2Phen. The 12M Euro project will unify and integrate locus specific data, genomics data, phenotype data, genetic testing data and will develop a Gen2Phen data model and data format, data access and analysis tools. The project has 19 partners in Europe, South Africa and India, and international travel will be required during the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for mapping multiple existing data models representing different loci, genomic level data and data obtained from multiple technologies, including clinical mutation detection, genotyping arrays and re-sequencing to a common data model developed by the consortium.

Semantic standardization will form the second part of the grant as data exchange becomes possible, and the post holder will develop text mining strategies, perform ontology mapping, develop tools to annotate partner data and will work on extending existing ontologies for use in Gen2Phen

The Microarray Informatics Team at the EBI consists of 40 people funded by 10 different grants providing data management for multiple EU projects and developing and curating the EBI core database ArrayExpress. The team has considerable experience in developing object models, mapping schema to standard data models and developing and mapping ontologies and additionally performs research in microarray data analysis and visualization. This is an excellent opportunity to join a large and dynamic team in a vibrant institute.

REQUIREMENTS

The post holder will have an understanding of biology gained from a first degree in a Biomedical Science or from research experience in genetics/genomics and a higher degree (Msc/PhD) in an informatics discipline such as IT or Bioinformatics. Experience with UML modelling, ontology use (OWL or OBO formats) and/or development, programming skills in at least one language (Perl/Java) are required. Experience of working with large consortia would be advantageous.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This may be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
