    BACKGROUND:
    The University of Virginia Cancer Center is recruiting a system architect to join a growing Cancer Informatics group, and lead the planning for and coordinate the implementation of an integrated cancer research information systems environment. The informatics architect will report to the Director of Cancer Informatics and collaborate with the cancer informatics operations manager and cancer informatics software developers and system managers.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The primary responsibilities of the architect are to act as the representative of the UVa Cancer Center for the National Cancer Institute Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™); select open source and/or commercial caBIG-compatible software for installation at UVa based on UVa Cancer Center needs and goals in clinical and basic cancer research; create an installation plan for this software with appropriate resource requirements and timelines; and manage the installation and subsequent maintenance and development of the software. The architect will also create detailed reports of the evaluation, implementation plan and implementation process for delivery to the caBIG project that can be used as guidelines for similar implementations at other cancer centers.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    A Master’s degree or above relevant to information technology or biological science, or equivalent experience, is required. Applicants must be familiar with enterprise information architectures and have significant experience in evaluation, installation and/or management of systems. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required and applicants must enjoy collaboration and problem solving in a dynamic environment.

    PREFERENCES:
    Five or more years of experience in system evaluation, development or management is preferred. Familiarity with web services, common open source technologies, biomedical research environments and applications in bioinformatics and clinical informatics is desirable.

    TERMS:
    This is full-time Instructor-level general faculty position, available immediately.
