BACKGROUND

We are looking for a Scientific Programmer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. The EBI is the primary data repository for biological data in Euope. A part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the EBI is located in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

The Vertebrate Genomics Team is seeking to recruit a talented bioinformatician/computational biologist to join the human variation group., which creates database and analysis resources for all types of variation data. We have recently launched the European Genotype Archive and are expanding our team to accommodate additional data types including copy number variation (CNV) and whole genome sequencing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will join the development team responsible for creating a database and analysis infrastructure for CNV data that facilitates the access, analysism, and display of the data. She/he will work closely with scientists in other projects including Ensembl, ArrayExpress and with other groups at the EBI.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must hold a PhD in genetics, bioinformatics or molecular biology or have a masters degree in one of these subject areas plus substantial experience in bioinformatics. Experience with large scale variation data and/or management of data collected in the course of clinical research is desirable.

The successful candidate must be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientist in an international academic environment. She/he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field.

Excellent communication skills are essential.

Additionally, candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work in a UNIX/Linux environment and have extensive knowledge of Perl and/or CC++, object orientated programming, and experience with relational databases such as MySQL is required.
