Opportunity: Project Leader in Vertebrate Genomics at EMBL--Hinxton, Cambridgeshire (UK)

PROJECT LEADER – VERTEBRATE GENOMICS (PANDA)

We are looking for a Project Leader to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. The EBI is the primary data repository for biological data in Europe. A part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the EBI is located in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

The Vertebrate Genomics Team is seeking to recruit a talented bioinformatician/computational biologist to lead the Ensembl variation informatics project. New technologies, especially next generation sequencing and dense microarrays, are generating large amounts of variation data and integration of his data is one of the critical aspects of Ensembl’s position as an information hub for genome information. Key areas of growth include copy number variation, whole-genome resequencing, and the informatics infrastructure for genotype to phenotype connections.

The post holder will be required to work closely with the Human Variation group within the Vertebrate Genomics team and the other project teams within Ensembl and the Ensembl Genomes project.

Ensembl is one of the leaders in vertebrate genome annotation and one oft eh key projects at the EBI. A part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the EBI is located in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

Applicants must hold a PhD in genetics, bioinformatics or molecular biology or have a master’s degree in one of these subject areas plus substantial experience in bioinformatics. Experience with large scale variation data is desirable.

The successful candidate must be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientist in an international academic environment. She/he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field.

Excellent communication skills are essential.

Additionally, candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work in a UNIX/Linux environment and be proficient with Perl and have experience of relational databases such as MySQL.

Some experience in leading a small team is desirable.
