BACKGROUND

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Library and Information Services Branch, is seeking a Technical Information Specialist (Bioinformatics) to initiate an innovative bioinformatics consultation service for scientists at NIEHS. NIEHS is one of 27 institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health. NIEHS is located in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. The position is a U.S. Federal Government GS-1412-13 series/grade level.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will plan, organize, and develop approaches and methods for solving the many complex problems that may be encountered. The incumbent provides guidance to scientists, research administrators, and computer scientists; tracks major trends in conducting scientific and medical research and applies emerging and innovative computer technologies to this field; searches a range of bioinformatics databases and uses various analytical tools related but not limited to sequence analysis, similarity searching, structure analysis/ prediction, gene expression, protein function, pathways, model organism, and text/data mining; uses advanced knowledge of programming, computational technologies and statistics to develop solutions and applications to solve problems in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and other areas in the life sciences; and applies a high degree of creativity in identification and resolution of policy and technical issues relating to the highly complex needs of researchers in different disciplines through the application of bioinformatics.

The incumbent serves as an informationist. Develops new and innovative information products and services needed by research groups. Prepares literature searches and bibliographies on medical, biological, chemical and allied subjects using the bibliographic databases of the National Library of Medicine and bioinformatics databases such as GenBank, BLAST and others from the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The incumbent develops a program of instruction in the use of print and electronic resources, bibliographic management software, and library and national network resources as applied to bioinformatics.

PREFERENCES

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and a proven history of collaborative research, innovation, and creativity. Education and experience in both science and library/information science are highly desirable. A Ph.D. in a relevant field of science is preferred.
