Summary
The Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, CA is looking for a talented Software Engineer/Developer 2 or 3 to assist in developing and maintaining a web based registry of biological parts for the Joint BioEnergy Institute. This position will assist in integrating the registry with the rest of the JBEI software infrastructure. This position will work closely with computational scientists, biologists and chemists to improve usability and interoperability with other informatics systems.

Duties
Essential (80%), under general supervision:
As part of a research group and software development team, you will be required to assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a web based registry for biological parts. Developing tools to integrate diverse biological and experimental data into the registry for storage and processing is key aspect of the position as well. You will provide customer support by responding to new feature requests, bug reports, and general requests; document and track feedback from end users; and promote collaborative effort with other groups. Effective communication, both orally and in writing, is required to accomplish goals of the team.
Marginal - 20%:
You will be required to attend project planning and review meetings as well as standing meetings with the other JBEI Groups. Participation in presentations and discussions about the team's work will be important. You will also participate in software release testing, document software and act upon feedback from end users.

In addition to the required duties for the Software Developer 3 will work at a higher level of independence and responsibilities in carrying out assignments; will be expected to mentor other team members in areas of expertise.

Qualifications
Essential –
B.S. in Computer Science, Life Sciences or related degree, or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years relevant experience are required. Experience developing software for scientific applications, specifically biological applications is a must. The Software Developed must have a broad understanding of bioinformatics tools such BLAST, CLUSTALW/X. Experience with relational databases including SQL, and XQuery. Demonstrated proficiency in web based application technologies such as CGI, JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, HTML/XHTML, etc. Proficiency in C++, Perl, and Python is essential. Effective interpersonal, and communication skills for supporting users, ability to work independently as well as part of a diverse team are all key requirements for the job. Marginal –
Knowledge of DNA and plasmid manipulation software is preferred.

In addition to the required qualifications for the Software Developer 2, the Software Developer 3 will have at least 5 years of relevant experience and prior experience in a technical leadership role. Knowledge of meeting programmatic milestones and project timelines is a plus.

Notes
This is a full-time one-year Term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued work, and funding availability. Classification will be at the 2 or 3 level depending upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and relevant experience. This position is exempt from the provisions covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
