    BACKGROUND

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute leads the world in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding the role of genomes in biological systems.

As a prelude to the full Tsetse genome sequence, an International Consortium including the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have recently manually annotated a large proportion of available transcriptome data for the Tsetse fly – the vector of African Sleeping Sickness. We are looking for a Senior Computer Programmer – Tsetse transcriptome data processing to process these data and make them available to the Tsetse research community via the GeneDB database (http://www.genedb.org).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicant will be responsible for processing data for import and mapping annotations between different assembly versions. He or she will also support ongoing manual annotation efforts by members of the research community. To achieve this goal, the individual will work with an in-house sequence assembly and annotation team as well as other members of the International Glossina Genomics Initiative (http://iggi.sanbi.ac.za). Part of this contract will also involve a short-term visit to SANBI (South African National Bioinformatics Institute), partners in the analysis of the Glossina transcriptome.

    REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should be highly organised and self-motivated and extensive experience handling large amounts of data and working with relational databases. Good programming skills in Perl or Java are essential. Familiarity with biological databases such as EMBL and UniProt and with standard sequence analysis software such as BLAST and FASTA would be an advantage.
