    BACKGROUND

The National Bioinformatics Network (NBN) was created in South Africa to develop capacity in bioinformatics in the country, especially among disadvantaged groups, and to perform world-class bioinformatics research. The NBN is made up of a network of nodes each situated at a University, for more information on the NBN see: http://www.nbn.ac.za. The University of Cape Town (UCT) node of the NBN is located at the medical school in the Institute for Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, and includes the following components: infrastructure, research, education and training, and services. The research focus is broad, but connected by ties to infectious diseases, molecular evolution and high-throughput data analysis.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We are offering a position in the UCT NBN Node to a dynamic individual, interested in working collaboratively on a range of exciting software development projects. The projects include development of annotation and analysis pipelines and tools for the integration of data from high-throughput experiments and public databases. We also seek to appoint a candidate with good web development and programming skills to assist with managing and serving human whole-genome genotype data. The appointee will play a leading role in establishing the infrastructure of a genome variation database with an African focus, and will provide computational support to researchers in the UCT NBN Node and Department of Human Genetics in the manipulation and analysis of high-throughput genotype data.

    REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidates will hold at least an MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, Statistics or Computer Science. Evidence of experience in bioinformatics-related software development would be an advantage.

    HOW TO APPLY

To apply for any of the above posts, please forward a CV and covering letter to info[at]cbio.uct.ac.za
