    DESCRIPTION

    RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - MOLECULAR GRAPHICS/MODELING LAB

    Conduct novel bioinformatics research and consultation in collaboration with K-INBRE network researchers (50%) –
    Activities will entail diverse research applications across the expanse of bioinformatics and computational biology, with primary prospective foci on proteomics data mining, biomarker detection, image processing, metabolomics and/or chemical biology.

    Develop and maintain sophisticated data management schemes in support of data intensive biological research efforts (40%) –
    Duties include developing and maintaining software, databases, and scripts enabling facile storage, retrieval and dissemination of biological data and laboratory information emerging from analytical data acquisition sources, portals, electronic notebook systems and other data entry forms that may arise.

    Instruct students and researchers in the theory and applications of bioinformatics (10%) –
    The specialist will be expected to develop and deliver workshops relating the use of resources provided within the K-INBRE bioinformatics core, and to deliver seminars and guest lectures in bioinformatics theory and application.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in bioinformatics, biology, computer science, biochemistry, or closely related discipline
    • At least two years experience in computer programming (e.g., C, C++, FORTRAN, java, javascript, JSP, PERL, SQL, Oracle, etc.)
    • Established track record of bioinformatics or computational biology research as shown by at least two peer-reviewed publications in these fields

    PREFERENCES

    • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Evidence of ability to work independently with attention to detail
    • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team-based environment
    • Experience in collaborating with experimental biology researchers, especially in the areas of proteomics, biomarker detection, metabolomics, and/or chemical biology
    • Web and database development skills
    • Established track record of applying statistical and/or data mining techniques to research problems
