    BACKGROUND:
    The Statistical Genetics group in the Department of Medicine at the
    University of Chicago is involved in the development and application of statistical
    techniques for genetic data analysis (see our web
    pages at http://www.genes.uchicago.edu; go to faculty and see Cox.)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The successful candidate will be responsible for
    writing and testing new software for genetic data management, as well as
    modifying the existing software to achieve higher efficiency and
    portability. S/he will have access to a new high-speed Linux compute
    cluster, and a number of smaller Linux and MS Windows workstations. The
    person hired will also assist with routine system and database
    administration support (Linux/MS Windows) for the group. The position
    offers considerable scope for creative work on important scientific
    problems in collaboration with other members of the research team.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Master's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences strongly preferred; exceptional candidates with bachelor's degree may apply.
    A minimum of two years of database (such as SQL) design and administration
    experience, excellent programming skills using C/C++, Perl and/or shell
    scripting, and Unix/Linux system administrator experience required.
    Previous experience with numerical/statistical methods, algorithms and
    software packages, for example, R, other programming languages, including
    Java, preferred. Ability to coordinate multiple concurrent projects and
    meet deadlines in a
    demanding research environment, attention to details, strong reasoning,
    oral communication, written communication (graphical and text based)
    skills, collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other
    divisions, laboratories, and universities, required.
