Opportunity: Bioinformatics Scientist Opportunity with Perlegen--Mountain View, CA, (US)
Submitted by Susan Becker; posted on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

    BACKGROUND

    Bioinformatics Scientist/Software Engineer

Perlegen Sciences, Inc. is working to provide safer and more effective drugs to consumers. The company’s expertise is in understanding human genetic variation within and across diverse patient populations and in conducting studies aimed at identifying variations that are predictive of drug response. Perlegen has established a leadership role in analyzing millions of common, single nucleotide variations (SNPs) across the whole genome and is now completing the development of a similar leading capability in examining other types of DNA variation across the genome. Perlegen also applies its expertise to discovering genetic variations associated with disease that can enable the discovery of novel targets leading to new therapeutics, as well as clinically useful diagnostics and biomarkers.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We currently seek a Bioinformatics Scientist/Bioinformatics Software Engineer to support ongoing efforts to integrate SNP genotyping and genomic resequencing data with functional annotation, gene pathway data and expression data sets. We'll rely on you to develop systems for integrating functional and pathway annotation with genetic association data and develop algorithms for new and existing sequence data analysis pipelines. Qualified candidates must have a firm understanding of the underlying biology and experience developing effective systems for aggregating data from diverse sources to help drive discovery efforts.

    REQUIREMENTS

This opportunity requires an MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or a related field and 2-5 years of experience in analyzing large scale genomic data. Extensive knowledge of public domain genome annotation data sources is essential, as is experience with common bioinformatics tools in a high-throughput data processing environment, fluency in a scripting language such as Perl, fluency in another high-level language such as C#, Java or C++, 2 years of experience in Oracle database systems, including both knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL, and a demonstrated ability to work in a team software development environment. Experience in text data mining, analyzing gene expression data sets, or developing data visualization tools, and knowledge of function and pathway ontologies are highly desirable.
