BACKGROUND

We are seeking a Bioinformatician to join the group of Toby Gibson at EMBL. The group develops and applies biological software tools in the analysis of protein data and is a co-developer of the widely used Clustal W alignment software. We support and develop a number of public bioinformatics web servers, notably the Eukaryotic Linear Motif resource, ELM http://elm.eu.org. The new project has arisen in the context of a grant-funded consortium to study mammalian protein complexes obtained using gene tagging-pulldown technologies. Bioinformatics will be used to evaluate the new data in the context of known complexes and interaction networks. Predictions will include searches for new interaction motifs, phosphorylation sites, kinase-substrate relationships and we will also seek to identify novel therapeutic targets. The consortium foresees experimental follow-up for key bioinformatics findings. The position will suit a bioinformatician interested in the role of protein complexes in cell regulation.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualified candidates will have (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. degree. The candidate is expected to be competent in coding in one or more scripting languages in a LINUX/UNIX-based context. Prior experience with protein complexes and/or interaction networks is an advantage, but the successful candidate could bring other perspectives such as statistical expertise into the project. The ability to work in a team, good organisational and communication skills in English as well as initiative, flexibility and good learning ability are also desired.

TERMS

An initial contract of 1 year will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on the circumstances at the time of review.
