BACKGROUND

The Bioinformaticians, who are usually biologists or biochemists with strong programming skills, contribute to the maintenance and development of the databases in the EBI's Protein and Nucleotide Database Group (PANDA).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected candidate will be responsible for the analysis and annotation of sequence data using UNIX-based software tools, the extraction of biological information from scientific literature or databases using high-throughput methods and the development of new analysis and annotation tools. In addition to these activities, the incumbent will contribute to the development of the group's external services and develop internal and external software specifications.

REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal applicant should hold a university degree in life sciences as well as have broad knowledge of molecular biology and/or biochemistry. Additional qualification in computer science and previous experience with biological databases and sequence analysis are desirable. A working knowledge of a popular programming language, such as Perl or Java, is required. Excellent communication and interpersonal as well as English skills are essential.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
