BACKGROUND:
The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) is housed at the University of Wisconsin with collaborators at Michigan State University along with other academic, private sector, and national laboratories. The GLBRC is one of three Department of Energy centers to conduct fundamental, genomics-based research on microbial and plant systems required to realize the national need for low-cost biofuels.
The Informatics and IT group will be working with the research teams of faculty, staff, and postdocs supporting the research objectives of the GLBRC in scientific and business computing, and computational infrastructure. We will be providing computational solutions in the diverse areas of knowledge management, LIMS, databases and data mining, in particular as related to large scale datasets generated by modern high throughput and massively parallel technologies of genomics and proteomics, as well as data integration for modeling and systems biology.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are seeking talented and versatile individuals who could contribute to these team efforts. This will be an exciting and challenging opportunity for professional development at the intersection of informatics and biotechnology: to use existing state-of-the-art computational tools as well as to develop new tools internally.
We have a number of openings at various levels and specializations including:
- Computational Biologist - will work with Center scientists to identify and define the needs for analysis of laboratory experiments and provide optimal computational solutions. Will actively participate in design of biological experiments and use computational tools to extract, process, and analyze various types of biological large-scale data, such as expression profiling, proteomics, or sequencing. Will provide value-added annotation to public and private data sets for development of in-house data repositories; will prototype scientific databases, analytical applications, and user interfaces; as well as integrate existing computational tools into analytical workflows. Will function as an internal consultant to GLBRC scientists assisting them in custom data analysis.
- LIMS Developer - will work with the scientific and software development teams to implement solutions for managing and optimizing large-scale storage of scientific data in industrial-strength LIMS implementations (both commercial and custom-built) and relational databases. Will consult with scientists to define research processes and computational models of laboratory operations, and translate them into workflows and software solutions for sample tracking and data collection. Will work with programmers and database administrators to develop database representations of scientific information.
- Knowledge Management Coordinator - will coordinate application of software tools to collaborative efforts of the Center's scientists and support staff across multiple locations: interface with scientific end-users, analysts, and database administrators, translate scientific processes into well-defined workflows, user interfaces, and information storage requirements, define appropriate structures and formats for representation of scientific knowledge, implement optimal solutions by configuring GUI interfaces in commercial software packages or by designing interfaces for internal development, and train end-users to assure optimal adoption.
- System Administrator/Programmer - will contribute to the development of the Center-wide hardware platform: configure, maintain, and integrate servers, workstations, clusters, and advanced storage under multiple OSes; interface with network configuration and security; develop reliable procedures for data backup and restoration; and help define and implement user policies.
- Database Administrator - will design and implement database schemas optimized for representation of experimental biological data. Will provide full operational support to in-house biological databases and manage integration efforts with external databases and data sources. Will consult with analysts and scientific programmers to develop data mining, querying, and reporting strategies retrieving the required data subsets of research findings for collaborators and staff.
- Web Application Developer - will work in a team environment to develop GUI interfaces and applications for scientific tools and databases: interface with analysts, database administrators, and end-users; collect requirements and translate them into optimal designs; code, test, and deploy the applications and interfaces.
The ideal candidates will have a suitable degree, experience in a biotechnology-related area, multidisciplinary skills, flexibility, and ability to multitask.
