BACKGROUND

The University of the Witwatersrand is one of South Africa's leading research universities. This is a new position which is part of our strategy to build up bioinformatics to complement our strong research programmes in the biological and health sciences. This position is an entry-level, tenure track post, which is equivalent in rank to an assistant professor in the North American system.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The main responsibilities will be teaching, research, and supervision of honours and postgraduate projects. Besides formal teaching activities, the candidate will be involved in training and helping researchers with bioinformatics-related research, and administration. The research productivity of the incumbent will be a key criterion for tenure and advancement; research collaborations with other researchers at Wits will be especially encouraged.

REQUIREMENTS

A PhD in bioinformatics or a cognate discipline (we shall consider applicants who have completed their theses); demonstrable knowledge of bioinformatics theory and techniques; high level of computer literacy including ability to write programs. Research and teaching experience in bioinformatics will be an advantage. Ability to work independently and with peers and students.

We hope to fill the position as soon as possible, but by 1 January at the latest.
