ABOUT US
Digicon Corporation, established in 1985, is a full-service Information Technology Integrator and Provider servicing Network Engineering and Software Development to both government and commercial customers. Digicon employs approximately 300 employees throughout the Washington metropolitan area, as well as several other major cities across the nation.
DESCRIPTION
We are currently in search for a Perl Scientific Programmer for a position based at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. In particular, this work is for the NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).
Specific Duties of Position:
Provide programming support for scientists involved in genome-based efforts. Duties of the position include the development of new databases and scientific software, and the implementation of third-party software for biological analysis.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required Skills & Experience:
This requires a minimum of three years programming experience, including:
Two years professional experience programming in Perl & CGI
Two years professional experience with relational database development
Solid knowledge of SQL and HTML
Experience developing and deploying applications on a UNIX and Linux platforms
Desired Skills & Experience:
Programming support on bioinformatics projects
Familiarity with public bioinformatics databases and tools (e.g., Entrez, UniGene, BLAST, UCSC Genome Browser, etc.)
Some experience with object-oriented programming
Some experience with Unix shell scripting
Prior use of versioning control software (CVS or RCS)
Additional Qualifications:
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must possess the ability to work independently with little direct supervision in a multi-tasking environment
Must possess the willingness and ability to work in a team environment consisting of both programmers and scientists
Must be well-organized and experienced in software documentation
Must have a cooperative and service-oriented attitude, must be able to work under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor
Education/Training
Bachelors degree in the computer or biological sciences
Background in the biological sciences or bioinformatics is strongly preferred
