Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICIAN: ENCODE ANALYSIS @ EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK

The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

The ENCODE project is a leading-edge international collaboration to identify all functional elements within the human genome sequence. EBI leads the multi-site Data Analysis Centre (DAC) for the scale-up phase of the ENCODE project with the aim of conducting integrative analysis of whole genome consortium data. The current post will involve implementing infrastructure to assist with large-scale functional data analysis and conducting integrative analyses as determined by the needs of DAC and the consortium.

We are looking for a candidate who will have either a biological, computational or physics background; in the latter case, the candidate is expected to show considerable enthusiasm in bioinformatics. (S)he will have at least five years experience programming in Perl, Java or Python and the ability to work in a collaborative, multi-centre project. Experience in large-scale genomic analysis would be beneficial, as would a background in statistics.

The ideal applicant will have a proven track record of working on large-scale biological data analysis projects and understand the challenges posed by such collaborative projects, including flexibility, tight deadlines, and use of state of the art bioinformatics approaches. We expect the candidate to be able to show extensive bioinformatics experience, including experience with relational databases particularly mySQL, spot programming using an appropriate language such as Perl, Python or Java and familiarity with high throughput DNA sequencing data. Experience with the existing Ensembl code base and data analysis pipelines would be beneficial.

Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are essential as the role will involve close liaison with other groups in the DAC as well as the members of the other Encode. The ability to present complex bioinformatics analyses in person and via teleconference will be invaluable.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
