    BACKGROUND

    Monsanto Company, based in St. Louis, MO, is a leading biotechnology company and a global provider of technology-based solutions and agricultural products that improve farm productivity and food quality.     RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are looking for a BIOINFORMATICIAN who will oversee data management, exploration, and mining of genomic and phenotypic data generated by Monsanto's transgenic plant pipeline. The new hire will work with the Data Mining and Integration group and automate loading and quality assurance for key phenotypic data types; design and build data query and visualization tools to explore phenotypic data in conjunction with genomic and systems biology data; and automate mining of the integrated datasets.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The successful candidate will possess the following skills/experience:
    • Excellent communication and problem-definition skills, to work with research groups that will use mining tools and with IT, bioinformatics, and statistical groups that will help implement them
    • Broad range of technical skills, including:
    • - Strong Perl programming skills are required, including object-oriented Perl.
    • - Linux and Solaris experience
    • Familiarity with at least one major toolset used for performing statistical analyses or generating data graphics, including but not limited to SAS, S+/R, Spotfire.
    • Candidates must have significant scientific programming in one or more of the following areas: computational data mining, functional bioinformatics, high-throughput analysis and/or general sequence analysis.
    • Experiencing building relational databases and applications that use them, with Oracle experience preferred.
    • Experience with standard bioinformatics sequence analysis tools is desirable.
    • Experience in building web-based applications or in at least one other object-oriented programming language is desirable.
    • Ph.D. or M.S. or equivalent in Biology, Bioinformatics, or Computer Science or other related disciplines
    • Experience in a research, agricultural, biotech or drug discovery environment specializing in high throughput genomics or high-throughput screening is highly desirable
    • Experience leading projects in a cross-functional environment is desirable
