BACKGROUND

The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. Ensembl is one of the world leaders in vertebrate genome annotation and one of the key services of the EBI. We are currently in the process of extending Ensembl to cover a wider taxonomic scope (a project known as Ensembl Genomes); this will result in the launch of a number of new divisions of Ensembl (e.g. Ensembl Plants, Ensembl Fungi, etc.) later this year.

We are looking to recruit an additional developer to join the Ensembl Genomes team. We are members of a consortium committed to identifying genomic variation in Arabidopsis thaliana, and the primary responsibility of the successful applicant will be the development of a database to capture this information, based on established Ensembl technologies. The Bioinformatician will also be expected to contribute to the general development of Ensembl Plants.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should possess a degree-level qualification in the computational or biological sciences; and at least two years experience of professional software development. The post holder must be highly proficient in the use of relational databases (particularly mysql) and be expert in the programming language Perl; ability in additional languages (e.g. Java) is desirable. Familiarity with the Ensembl system, genome annotation, or plant genetics, will be advantageous to applicants. Excellent communication, interpersonal and English skills are essential.

TERMS

An initial contract of 2 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
