An exciting opportunity to join the Informatics Department at the new Institute for Genome Sciences, a world class institute to support genomic, basic and translational research to improve human health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and beyond. We intend to accomplish this goal by leveraging the expertise of our domain experts, computational scientists, and engineers, a state-of-the-art computational facility and our partnerships with other universities and organizations. This position has a lead role in the setup and management of a state-of-the-art computational facility at the new Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS). The computational facility will be built using the latest technologies in high-throughput and high-performance computers and an enterprise class storage system.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, deploy, and maintain network equipment, desktops, servers, and storage systems.
- Maintain and upgrade operating systems.
- Install and configure third party applications.
- Act as the senior technical specialist to partner with other technical staff in designing project scope, tasks, and plans for development of new systems or modifications to existing systems.
- Develop, document, and test modifications, policies and procedures, and disaster recovery plans
- Perform backups and data archival.
- Provide technical support.
REQUIREMENTS
- 4 years of appropriate education, experience and/or training with networked centrally operated and supported computing systems. Bachelor’s degree and/or coursework in Computer Science or Information Systems preferred.
- 5 years of progressively responsible systems administrator experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Expertise in at least 2 Unix/Linux operating systems: (RedHat/Suse/Solaris/AIX/HPUX)
- Experience in Windows and Macintosh operating systems and integrating them in a Unix/Linux environment
- Advanced expertise with enterprise class storage systems using technologies such as iSCSI, SAN, NAS and vendors such as EMC, StorageTek, IBM, and NetApp.
- Expertise with wired and wireless networking hardware and architectures. Familiarity with Cisco switches, Virtual LAN setup and configuration, Virtual Private Networks, routing, IPV4, IPV6, etc.
- Expertise with various protocols such as TCP/IP, ICMP, NFS, DNS, FTP, etc.
- Expertise in system security, OS hardening and authentication protocols such as LDAP, Kerberos.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Perl, Unix shell scripting (bash, csh, etc).
- Ability to configure, compile, and install third party applications.
- Familiarity with the LAMP stack and configuration thereof.
- Proactively addresses intricate performance enhancement issues that have potential impact for the campus community.
- Experience with various Mail Transfer Agents (MTAs), including (but not limited to) Microsoft Exchange as well as knowledge of the underlying SMTP protocol.
- Ability to provide guidance and assistance to less experienced staff
- Advanced analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Able to engage in end-user technical support when necessary
