An exciting opportunity exists to join the Bioinformatics department at the new Institute for Genome Sciences, a world class institute established to support genomic research to improve human health at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and beyond. We intend to accomplish this goal by leveraging the expertise of our domain experts, computational scientists, engineers, a state-of-the-art computational facility, and our partnerships with other universities and organizations.RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities for this position include development of web interfaces and maintenance of existing websites, including the institute’s intranet.
Essential Functions:
- Design and implementation of modern and appealing web interfaces
- Maintain, administer and extend the institute’s content management systems
- Maintain and upgrade existing web interfaces and web sites
- Keep abreast of the latest developments and trends in the web development industry
REQUIREMENTS
Possess a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Human Computer Interaction or related field, or at least 2 years professional experience as a web designer/developer. Graphic artists/designers with significant web development experience are also encouraged to apply. One year of professional experience with Javascript development, preferred.
The preferred candidate will have:
- Experience with creating visually appealing and functional web interfaces to support business needs and enhance human usability
- Good understanding and ability to author, modify and maintain cascading style sheets (CSS)
- Superior level of ability with the leading commercial and open-source graphical software tools to create original, vibrant, attractive and visually appealing graphical elements for incorporation into web and other interfaces (e.g., Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Gimp, etc)
- Good understanding of the various X/HTML specifications, relevant W3C standards and how to implement conforming markup while maintaining a consistent look and feel across browsers and operating systems
- Possess a good understanding of cross-browser web development and rendering issues between the most common web browsers in use
- A high degree of knowledge of graphic design principles including color theory, layout, typography, etc…
- Good analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment and meet schedules
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Experience with “Web 2.0” related technologies and frameworks (eg, DHTML, AJAX, Dojo, Prototype, Scriptaculous, etc)
- Proficient with Perl or another server-side, open-source web development language (eg, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java/JSP, etc…)
- Ability to administer, modify and extend instances of the Drupal content management system
- Familiarity with a rich internet application framework (eg, Adobe Flash/Flex/Air, Microsoft Silverlight, Sun JavaFX, etc…)
