    BACKGROUND

    Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, is a world leader in the discovery, development and delivery of elite crop genetics. Pioneer was named Top Large Company to Work for in 2008 by The Scientist magazine. We are currently seeking an Informatics Support Scientist - Molecular Breeding for our Wilmington, DE location.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Molecular Breeding Informatics Support Scientist will provide sophisticated scientific consultation, data analysis capabilities, project leadership, and informatics support bridging the areas of Molecular Breeding, Bioinformatics, and Field Research for its Crop Genetics Research program. This individual will work closely with Research and Informatics staff to foster and maintain professional client relationships and establish connections with Molecular Breeding and Informatics support teams to facilitate discussion and collaboration between these teams and Research clients. This position will also be responsible for providing sophisticated hands on analysis, support and training for a diverse group of plant researchers working with complex molecular breeding and related data sets. The incumbent will seek to understand current and potential informatics needs of researchers, particularly as they relate to the application of molecular breeding technologies, and effectively communicate the urgency and impact of client needs to key stakeholders. Depending on the skills and experience of applicant, this position may also manage a team of 5 to 6 scientific informatics support professionals.

    REQUIREMENTS

    A Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Plant Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field with 3+ years of post-degree experience in pertinent field is required; Industrial experience is highly desirable. Broad skills in the areas of plant breeding, molecular breeding, mapping, and statistical analysis will be required. Proficiency in Windows and UNIX environments and experience with a variety of data analysis tools such as Perl, Excel, and Spotfire is necessary. Experience with statistical software packages such as S-Plus and R, and working knowledge of modern relational database systems is highly desirable.

    The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and to effectively solve problems and manage complex informatics projects, sometimes under significant time constraints. The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal. Experience with successful project management principles and demonstrated team leadership and personnel management skills are highly desirable.
